In the early 2000's, Compaq had a lead in the Unix world of clustering technology, simultaneously using the computing power of multiple servers while looking like a single machine. Compaq was able to monitor machines individually but was unable to judge the performance of the cluster as a whole. ActiveEdge developed this back end tool to prove to Compaq's customers that the cluster would maintain a 99.999% uptime.
